Jane Frere

Scottish artist Jane Frere lived for many years in Greece where she began her career as a painter and theatre designer. After training at Central St Martin’s College of Art and Design and completing post-graduate studies at the Slade School of Art in London where she was awarded the Leslie Hurry prize . She undertook commissions as a theatrical set and costume designer in the UK and Greece . She has also worked as an international theatre producer taking theatre companies mostly from former Eastern Europe to the Edinburgh Festival and to countries world-wide.

She has lectured and given workshops in many international venues and has been a visiting lecturer on theatre design degree courses in London and Glasgow . She taught costume design for theatre and film at the Arts Institute at Bournemouth for a number of years.

Integrating disciplines her current artistic work is experimental using a variety of media including sculpture, sound and film. She became immersed in the theme of the Palestinian exodus An Nakbah in 2005, leading to her first video installation presented alongside performances by Al Kasaba Theatre, Ramallah, during the Maski Festival in Poland in November 2006.

She has devoted herself exclusively over the past two years to developing her artistic exploration of An Nakbah in collaboration with al Hoash and Palestinian artists.
