Wavering between cosmopolitanism and parochial politics and periodically challenged to redefine its identity, Alexandria builds on the memory of its glorious but tumultuous past and the opportunities the present offers, with the Bibliotheca Alexandrina as an embodiment of the renewal that the city thrives for.
