Ramallah weddings are featured in this exhibition through a group of studio photographs.
Following local tradition, marriages were mostly an arranged affair between families, rather
than through an agreement between the couples themselves. We see in this series, brides
and grooms standing formally in a ritualistic pose - perhaps in a first recorded declaration of
their nuptial ties. The setting is also staged by the studio with scenic backdrops or appropriate
architectural props to portray a romantic environment, a forecast of harmony and happiness
for the newlyweds. In contrast there is a sense of awkwardness and stiffness between the
bride, in her white wedding dress and impressive bouquet of flowers of calla lilies or roses,
and the bridegroom. In some other of these staged poses, the couples hold hands or look
dreamily into each other’s eyes. True love or part of an act, dictated by society and tradition.
