White Map.
Mirna Bamieh
“White Map” takes an illustration for Lewis Carroll„s poem " The Hunting of the Snark' (1874) as a reference. White Map is a map that is completely blank apart of a few heavenly coordinates, where it becomes a framework for an imagery journey, it becomes an empty space that invalidates conventions and allows for a view of the world without purpose, a metaphor for all maps by containing the sum of all possible projections. White Map raises as a Utopian map, it works as an "unimagined" vision of a world where boarders, division, and obstacles are swallowed in white void. Despite this old timed vision of the world (published in 1874), it still functions as "unimagined" for our current perception, and continues to operate as an outlet for our laden existence with restrictions, barriers, obstacles and boundaries. Through this artwork I try to question the possibilities we have, in a world where divisions, separations and borders are expanding with no stop, in a world where the borders between the real and the virtual are unrecognizable anymore. The Poem "The Hunting of the Snark, an Agony in Eight Fits" 1874 is a poem about a crew who are looking for a creature called the "Snark", a creature as Carroll describes is ”unimagined”, and for their quest they were given by the Bellman a white map. Hunting of the Snark, An agony in Eight Fits The Second Fit The Bellman's Speech The Bellman himself they all praised to the skies- Such a carriage, such ease and such grace! Such solemnity too! One could see he was wise, The moment one look in his face! He had brought a large map representing the sea, Without the least vestige of land: And the crew were much pleased when they found it to be A map they could all understand. "What's the good of Mercator's North Poles and Equators, Tropics, Zones, and Meridian Lines?" So the Bellman would cry: and the crew would reply, "They are merely conventional signs! "Other maps are such shapes, with their islands and capes! But we've got our brave Captain to thank" (So the crew would protest) "that he's brought us the best- A perfect and absolute blank!"
