ART & ARTISTS EXHIBITIONS
THE VIRTUAL GALLERY   AT BIRZEIT UNIVERSITY

Between here and somewhere else

Between Here & Somewhere Else is a project that has been initiated by artists Helen de Main (UK) and Maj Hasager (DK) and has been developed out of a number of research periods spent in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories since 2007. It consists of a series of exhibitions of new work by de Main and Hasager that is accompanied by a selection of interpretative material and a programme of events and educational workshops. The project was originally presented in Jerusalem in April 2010, traveling to Bethlehem and then to Ramallah, with different works being presented in each location, connecting to the artists’ experiences of spending time in each of these places. It will be shown at Overgaden Institute for Contemporary Art, Copenhagen from November 2010 to January 2011. During their travel back and forth to the region over a number of years, de Main and Hasager have developed an ongoing relationship with and commitment to these places and people, their politics and history. They are interested to investigate the realities of artists working outside of their native cultural environment, and have devised this project as a way of trying to interpret the current environment of the area, as viewed from the position of a foreigner. The works in the exhibitions draw upon experiences and ideas related to the production and subsequent narration of different histories, through oral, written and visual traditions and the role of personal and collective memory within the development and assertion of identity. They have been observing and documenting the altering, replacing or erasing of landscapes, buildings, and cultural heritage; whether being done through militant means, or due to short-term strategies, unstable ideologies, and leaderships from within. Works reference museum like modes of presentation, as past and contemporary histories are examined through archaeologies of objects and stories collected from across the area. These consider the role of cultural heritage, conservation, and preservation pitched against iconoclasm and forms of destruction. Three essays accompanied the exhibitions by Khaled Hourani, Adania Shibli and Sary Zananiri. Please visit www.betweenhere.net for more information on the project and to read the essays.
